Formally and politically, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland form an unity. But not so in the minds of their peoples. We all know the story of Northern Ireland. The Scots have their own money and their own parliament, the Welsh their own language while the English have their own football team. Britain does't have a football team, but the national anthem Rooney & co are singing along and waving their St. Georges Cross to says "God save the Queen", which refers to Elizabeth the IInd who is the monarch not only of England, but of the entire Commonwealth Realms. On the other hand, Linford Christie, even though Jamaican-English, waved a Union Flag when he won the gold medal in the Olympic games 1992 in Barcelona. The Union Jack often gets associated with colonialism and British rule for example in some parts of Africa and still today, the British troops keep carrying the flag.

Since the sixties, the seek for identity manifests itself in the emblem actually becoming a fasion item.

Skype Video for Mac Os X Beta has arrived!

Finally! It is an ultimate challenge to find out, when exactly a certain picture has been taken. When I first tried Google Earth a couple of days after its launch, I noticed, the city of Bern, Swiss Capital, was not included in high resolution map yet.

After a couple of months though, I found out, that Bern had been added to the high resolution images.

Soon after, I began to wonder, at what time the picture had been taken.

Here is how I found out: I needed to find a place on the map, that was not only constantly changing, but its change must also have been recorded and accessible to me. This was quite a challenge, however, I have found something, that perfectly suits the requirements. It was a construction site in the north of the city. The former "Wankdorf Stadion" (sic.) now referred to as "Stade de Suisse" is a football stadium, that has been built during the time, the satellite image has been taken.

I remembered, that there was also a webcam on site, that was recording the progress of the construction site. Luckily I have found the archive of these images and started comparing the pictures (that were taken every 5 minutes during 3 years) with the image visible on Google Earth. Since the vehicles are constantly moving on the site, you can determine at a approximately 5 to 10 minutes accuracy, when the satellite image must have been taken.

There is a number of elements, that indicate the time and allowed me to narrow down the time:

Looking at the casted shadows of the cranes and tall objects led me to the assumption, the picture must have been taken at noon.

The weather needs to be clear and cloudless in order to take satellite images

The progress of the construction site is a good indicator

The constellation and colors of the parked cars are also changing

So I started comparing the satellite image with the images found on http://www.wankdorf-stadion.ch/fotos/ which consists of more than 6 GB of webcam pictures taken and archived every 5 minutes 24/7.

Conclusion
The result of this small investigation was: The satellite image of Bern on Google Earth must have been taken between 11:25 hours and 11:30 on January the 30th 2002. Compare the Google Earth satellite image with this image.

Full size view of analysis

Animation of the 30th January 2002. Notice the red car at the far right leaving between 11:25 and 11:30. It is visible on the satellite image.

How about other days?
Too cloudy, progress with construction site not in sync or parked cars don't match:

Download KMZ of Wankdorf Stadion (Google Earth)

Thanks: Hansjürg Wenger of Berner Fachhochschule for providing me access to the archive images.

digg story

Update:
Thanks to James Turnbull for pointing out that there is a proof that I got the date right!

The Inaudible Ringtone

This was before my generation, but apparently nowadays, mobile phones in classrooms seem to be a problem. Therefore many teachers prohibit their students to have their mobile phones switched on during classes. Obviously, those who ignore these rules will have to take pedagogical actions. Anyway, a british student now invented a ringtone, that cannot be heard by adults.

It works due to the fact, that the spectrum of audible sounds in adults is more narrow than on teenagers: Adults can usually hear up to the frequency of 14 kHz, whereas young people are able to hear sounds of 16 or 17 kHz. Therefore the ringtone can be noticed by the students as a very high pitch sound.

via New York Times

The ideal patchwork world

Advertising is about selling ideal worlds. Even the fact, that you can read this text here on your screen call for an arbitrary number of machines to do specific operations.

Software is a set of instructions readable by machines, filled up with ideas and written by humans. As machines and automated processes gradually become more ubiquitous in our surroundings, the need for human-machine interfaces becomes very evident.

The beauty of software development is, that *everything* that is thinkable is also doable. It is all a question of time (and money). Artists in general are visionary masterminds using their creativity in a way, that surprises the audience. So every artist operating in the field of media that wants to push his/her creativity to the limits sooner or later gets involved into ideas that require software development. Some of them even become pure software developers.

Art is always a form of communication, and true communication requires the unlimited and free flow of information. The information exchange between humans and machines however is anything but transparent. In contrary, the process called "compiling" is an almost irreversible process that creates very cryptic machine code (binary code) out of a human readable set of instructions (source code). And just as the Coca Cola Company is keeping their recipe secret, so does Microsoft their source code. Would they not do this, the ideas would become just as public as nowadays everybody knows, how to make butter out of cream.

Art is also always somehow idealistic. Sometimes even quixotic. Artists make a point, send a message, change the world. No matter if it's by adding grandiose music to a concert hall, paint a nice picture of a sunflower or build a glorious cathedral. "Artificial" comes from "art" (or vice versa) and is always human made - and with the purpose to change the world to the better.

The community of open source developers believes in the idea, that human-machine communication should be free. Free not only as in "free beer" but, and even more important, as in "free speech". Simply available for everyone (to contribute). Detached from materialistic ideas.

The way artists usually make money is by selling their pieces. It is important, that these pieces come in limited editions or are attached to license fees (e.g. musicians, writers, fine art photographers). Otherwise there would be no way of making any monetary profit of the hard work (which is undoubtedly necessary in today's world). Is this why an artist propagating open source software will never make money out of his/her work?

(In this article, "Open Source" mostly refers to "Free Software")

How clever are we?

Times Online published an article about the distribution of IQ points across Europe. Amongst the first couple of countries are Germany, the Netherlands, Poland or Sweden. According to Professor Richard Lynn of the University of Ulster, there is a relation between cold countries where people seem to have larger brains than in warmer terretories. Also is there a big difference between rural and urban places. Furthermore, the diet plays an important role. E.g. meat contains more proteins which are important for the development of the thinking organ. Ah, yes, and also if the country was at war at some stage, plays a role - except in the case of Germany.

So the whole thing doesn't say anything at all after all, or does it?

Sitting On The Fences In A World Without Fences: An Essay About Network Neutrality

During the middle ages and the mariners and explorers, when the Europeans arrived in the "New World", the aborigines in this newly discovered place had no understanding of posession of land. It was just as absurd to believe, land could belong to a person, as it is today with the air we breathe.

This has to do with the fact, that what the peoples who later had become well known as the "Red Indians" were nomads and thus not bound to a specific locality. They just use the land they sit on for a certain period of time and then move on to the next place. They did not claim any tenure of the land they were sitting whatsoever.

Because all the tribes were moving about, this was not a problem. However the European's understanding of building a society had most of the time consisted of settling down. Living on a piece of land also means, you have to own this land and once you own it, you can determine, whatever is going to happen with that. This was the time when it all went wrong. Or didn't it?

The internet somehow started as a network of peered telecom companies. In other words, the telecom companies allowed traffic to pass through their network without questioning, what this traffic was used for. This so called "Peering Agreements" allowed communications without boundaries and there is no doubt that most of the success of the internet is based on the way, traffic is handled.

It is more than understandable, that nowadays, when big companies build up huge profits on the traffic through these telecom networks, the provider of these networks want to see a share of that profit. One of the popular solutions would be something like a prioritized traffic on the internet. If Google wants to have their search results delivered faster, they would have to pay for it. This concept contradicts the fundamental idea and tradition of the "Network Neutrality".

However, it is also perfectly clear, that believers in the free and open internet advocate the "Network Neutrality" as they claim it to be the main reason for the Internet's success and progress. Abandoning "Network Neutrality", so they say, would not only mean constricting further progress but it would also splinter the Internet as we know it.

I perfectly understand both parties in this situation and I must say, the only way out of this awkwardness can be a de-privatisation of the Internet's underlying infrastructure.

Even though the example with the Native Americans shows, that financial profit or the sense of private property can push back openness and liberty, I can give you an example, where openness and free accessibility has proved its way even within a profit orientated society: The United States road traffic system. I am aware of the fact, that there are traffic tolls in place in certain countries, however, in one of the most competitive countries in the world, the United States, you can get from any place to another without having to pay any traffic toll fee whatsoever. (Setting aside certain bridges or tunnels.) The traffic system is being supported and funded by the "Federal Highway Administration" (http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/) on one side and the accordant city council on the other. This means, transportation has to be guaranteed by the state/authority, and everyone, no matter if it's me on a bicycle, an armored car service carrying thousands of dollars or a long distance truck driver.

This obviously only works, if the entire traffic system administration falls under one authority of regulation and if the interest of this regulatory authority is the benefit of all and not to the benefit of itself. This authority can then decide what it needs to keep the service up and running in an effective way and how the whole infrastructure should be funded and maintained.

So the bottom line of all of this is, in the particular case of the internet backbone carriers, I believe, competition and free market is more of a harm than of a benefit. Just as as the roads in your neighborhood are free to use - or at least for a flat rate - , so should the internet connections be. It's not more than a global village after all.

Brands in Memory

How much of a brand actually stays in our memories? However, it is still a bit complicated to understand the Google Maps API (Application Programming Interface) particularly if you are not familiar with these kind of things. Therefore there is MyGoogleMaps that allows you to easily create your own map(s) within a web interface. It is still at very early stage but it looks already very promising.

MacBook Pro

Apple Macintosh has revealed its first intel x86 processor laptop today. The MacBook Pro is not only supposed to run up to 4 times faster than a ppc mac but it has also a couple of neat features such as a built in camera. This is perfect for using with isight and video chat!

Another interesting thing is, that currently, google.com returns not a single result for the query "macbook pro". This is going to change within the next couple of days. The blogsphere is already full of articles about it. It is going to be interesting to see how google is going to catch up. Technorati.com has already hundreds of entries in all various languages. Before I moved to London in June 2005, I have been working in the Swiss mobile telecom industry for one year.

There is currently a big discussion going on in Switzerland about the privatisation of "Swisscom", the former state telecom company "PTT". The Swiss State ist still holder of more than half of the shares and considering getting them in the public market. I pursue this discussion with great interest because since I have been working here in the UK, I became aware of the dimension of the market in the global or at least the European context.

In fact, I believe, the Swisscom, even though the market leader in Switzerland is in a very critical position. Yet it has a lot of liquid funds, a remarkable set of roaming contracts around the world and numerous interesting technological assets such as a notable 3G and EDGE coverage within the country.

But this is soon going to change. The Swiss market is simply too small for a company like Swisscom. The 3 million subscribers are not worth mentioning compared to the numbers of its competitors in Europe: Vodafone 150, Telefonica 145, T-Mobile 70 million subscribers worldwide (just to name three European carriers).

So there are only two options in the long term, eat or being eaten - and for "Swisscom", I only see the latter to apply in the global context. I am sure, this reminds us all of what has happened to the "Swissair" in October 2001. After a couple of backs and forths, the only decent thing that could happen, happened: The swiss public faced the fact that the a corporation like the "Swissair" (or later "Swiss") cannot survive in such an isolated market as Switzerland (Even London alone has a bigger population as entire Switzerland). It needs strong presence in a bigger context: The European market.

So what what will happen to "Swisscom"? First of all, the Swiss State has to get off the business affairs. Managing "Swisscom" and running the company is not the duty of the state. In fact, its mission is to regulate the market. Once the shares are public, it is likely that an european carrier (most likely "Vodafone", as they already hold "Swisscom" shares) invest in "Swisscom", simply because it is a lucrative market to be in. And eventually, the brand "Swisscom" will be completely replaced by the aquirer's brand.

But why is staying independent not an option for "Swisscom"? I believe, that the fact that the telecom market is such a fast paced and technologically driven market, you need a critical size in order to get return on your (research/technology) investments. The UMTS (or 3G) bid was a good example. At a certain point, it will not make sense to invest in the latest technology anymore, particularly if you have "only" 4 million subscribers. There is no room for growth in the Swiss market and bigger companies have more advantages in amortizing their investments.

The big issue that is coming up here is the loss of the identity. It will be painful for the public to adopt the fact, that "Swisscom", as swiss as it sounds, will not longer be a swiss company. Like every other company that hungers for a bigger market than the isolated and encapsulated off-european Swiss market.

But let's wait for the Chinese. They presently already have more than 300 million mobile phone subscribers (shared between two mobile telecom companies!), and the market is growing at a stunning 50 million additional subscribers per year. Maybe "Vodafone" may soon be spelled 声音数据电话.

List of Opensource Software for Mac OS X

This is a really good list of open source software for Mac Os X. Who ever is using a Mac - I can recommend most of those tools. (E.g. Adium, Mplayer, VLC, Handbrake, NeoOffice or Blender are programs I am using.) However, don't forget to donate - as I do. If I find a piece of software really useful, I am happy to show the developer(s) my appreciation by sending them over a couple of bucks via PayPal. I do not think, this is a coincidence. I believe that Google has realized that at some point, everybody will use his personal news feeds to get informed rather than just checking up a few news sources on a regular base. This will lead into a weakening of the current information sources' positions and support the possibility to get a wider variety and more independent opinions on topics of interest.

The way most of us read the news today has a long tradition. It originated in the 15th Century with the invention of the printing with movable letters by Johannes Gutenberg. Since then, the format has not much changed, we still get the newspapers printed out black on grey paper. At some point, there were pictures, then they became colorful, but let's face it, that doesn't make much of a difference, doesn't it?

The invention of TV and Radio also shaped our perception of the world. News have become more time-dependent, more instant and more transient.

The strong demand for news has accelerated the broadening of the spectrum of the news. Nowadays, we have magazines for all sorts of topics. From modeling through to mountaineering. From gambling through to gaming. But it goes even further. Currently, we find ourselves in a time, where a network such as the web happens to be discovered as a suitable medium not only to publish, but to reach a potentially wide public. Weblogs allow anybody to become a publisher. And since there are no restrictions and hardly any regulations, anyone can basically write about anything. A key feature of networked publishing is the possibility and the habit to connect sources with each other. Any word can be a potential reference to another source.

A further key feature about networked publishing are so called RSS (Really Simple Syndication, RDF Site Summary or Rich Site Summary) feeds. The amount of the current news sources is so immense, nobody will ever be able to keep up with the torrents of news. So the RSS feeds turn out to be very suitable short summaries of a news source.

At one point in the future, you will find out, that there are simply too many news sources that interest you. So you will have to subscribe to the RSS feeds, only to be able to keep track with the news. Within the feeds, you will pick the news articles, that interest you and aggregate them to a personalized news-site that just fits your personal interests. Will this be the dawn of the age of complete personalization and the downfall of protection of data privacy?

I am now publishing on the "MAzine" (www.mazine.ws), a online magezine emerged from Ravensbourne Students/Lecturers. I have published this article there.

Let's have a look at Flock

I am just trying out this www.flock.com thing. Seems quite neat for the moment, however, still a bit buggy for my taste. Let's see how the next version looks like! The concept behind it lools very promising - I hope it can technically be implemented attractively and userfriendly.

For those, who do not know yet, Flock is a browser based on Mozilla/Firefox, that allows you to contribute actively through integrated user interfaces to interactive and collaborative online tools such as del.icio.us, Flickr or a series of blogging platforms. The user interface allows concise access to your del.icio.us bookmarks.

The interface is written in XUL (amongst others) and is still a bit clobby and slow for the moment. But it I am currently using the beta version, still. There will be a proper release soon.

Technorati Tags: flock, xul

We And Our Mobile Phones

Good things can happen when your phone's on

Ok, so we're pretty biased here but it's true isn't it? It's just that mobiles are now such an everyday part of life that we take them for granted. We overlook the things they give us. Like the freedom to move about. And organise things on-the-go. And then be really flakey and change our minds at the last minute. Or how they've helped us get better at communicating. Even those of us who are a bit shy. We're all yabbering on more. And texting. And exchanging jokes, and pictures of that dog with the stupid face. Further still, whisper it, but they make us feel a bit more secure. Less isolated. More connected. Like we've got all our friends in our back pocket. Not bad eh? More mobile. More sociable. More secure. Pretty fundamental stuff really. That's why, on the whole, we're feeling pretty up about things.

Good things can happen when your phone's off

We've got to admit, a switched-off mobile can say a lot. It can say to the person next to us "I think you deserve my full attention." Or it can let our kids now, "You're more important than office." It's a simple gesture but it speaks volumes. Likewise, you can call to say thank you, but if you really mean it, maybe send a letter. A nice hand-written job on fancy paper. And, sure, texting someone a flirty something is all clean fun. But, let's face it, the good stuff doesn't happen until you show up in person. That's the thing about the new gizmos we come up with. They never replace established ways of communicating They just make them more special. Worth considering. After all, the more special we make each other feel, the better we'll all get on. And that's got to be a good thing.

I have found this master piece of copywriting on Northern Line Southbound London Bridge Tube Station on a Orange billboard.

Back to the School Bench

This week was my first week at the Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication (Networked Media Environments). The swiss voters will once again decide, if Switzerland should move towards a cooperation with the European Union or choose the "we will do it on our own"-way.

Since I have been living here in London (this city alone has 7 million inhabitants - roughly the same as entire Switzerland) I have realised, how crucial Switzerland's cooperation with the EU is. Switzerland is such a small and insignificant country, it hardly gets any notice, in particular if you are in the media and communication business as I am. All the companies, we have been working with (Sony, Warner Brothers, Universal just to name a few) focus their investments in Europe, especially in the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

Not only do I think it is naive and silly to think, Switzerland can do it on its own, I even think it is essential for the survival of the swiss economy in the long term to partner up with Europe.

As CNN analizes:
During World War II, Switzerland and tiny neighbor Liechtenstein stood alone in central Europe in maintaining their independence from Nazi Germany. Switzerland considered itself a "special case" as its postwar economy forged ahead of its neighbors.

It is now slowly realizing that its special status may no longer be sustainable. The coalition government favors closer cooperation with and eventually joining the EU, but many of the country's German speakers -- who make up about two-thirds of the population -- are opposed to integration.

Source: CNN

To me, this whole discussion somehow has the flavour of the Olden Days, when people used to think, the Earth was the center of the universe, until we slowly realized, that our planet is just one of a billions. From the outside, Earth suddenly turns out to be completely insignificant. It is time for the conservatives in Switzerland to realize, that this country is just one out of a twohundredsomething - and it's even e very small one. So better parnter up if you don't want to miss the chances of a prosperous future in which cooperation would be more important than ever.

A Tiny Political Statement

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. The bets were standing around 70 to 1 for "The Gunners" to win. So everybody seemed to know, how the match would turn out.

The initial 20 minutes or so were quite boring. Nothing really happened, Arsenal struggled to score a goal, Thun's defence seemed quite well organized. However tention began to rise, when in the 45th minute, an Arsenal player had to leave due to a Red Card (severe foul). The entire Stadium (34'498 spectactors minus a couple of Hardcore Thun Fans) tuned in the chorus " ♫ The Ref-eree ♫♪ is a Wanker! ♪♫ The Ref-eree is a Wan-ker! ♪♫". Nevertheless, in the 51. minute, Arsenal scored the first goal and the whole stadium broke out into euphory... for one minute. 1:1 in the 52nd minute. Now, tension began to rise. Would the match turn out to a complete embarrassment for Arsenal? Everything was possible.

Disappointed Arsenal fans had already left the stadium when in the 93rd minute a third goal was scored. Dennis Bergkamp, Hollands National Team player and probably Aresnal's Fan's favourite player managed to score the winning goal for the Gunners. Their honor was saved. However, it was thight. I would have loved seeing the few Thun fans leaving the stadium in joy while other 34'400 or so Gunner fans left the stadium a little bit more down to earth.

A Brief History Lesson

Since I am here in Britain, I would also like to jump at the chance to get to know more about this country. I noticed, that there is a confusion about the definitions, when you ask people on the streets. Most of them are referring to "England" but mean "Great Britain". What about the "United Kingdom" and what is the "Common Wealth"? What is the difference between "Great Britain" and "United Kingdom"?

"Britain" is often being used as the colloquial term for "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", which is the official name of this country. "Great Britain" consists of the three parts "England", "Scotland" and "Wales". The "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" has been founded in 1801 with an "Act of Parliament".

Before that time, in the Middle Ages, Wales consisted of multiple Kingdoms and Princedoms. Around 1300 the English took control and in 1536, Wales was "integrated" into England by a law.

Scotland and England were separate kingdoms until in 1603 King James VI of Scotland (or King James I of England) successed Queen Elisabeth I creating the "Kingdom of Great Britain". In 1707 both countries were finally merged.

Since the 12th Century, Ireland was under English influence until it had been integrated into Great Britain in 1801 . In 1922 the southern part of Ireland segregated and became the "Republic of Ireland". (Thanks Ursi for the information provided)

Arsenal vs. FC Thun

Can you imagine a major football club of international reputation like Arsenal taking on something that sounds rather like a local football society like "FC Thun"? Well, you wouldn't have to imagine - it has become reality. On September the 14th, Arsenal is meeting FC Thun here in London.

"Thuna" ... what's "Thuna"?! Was the first reaction of the Londoners, when they found out. "This is going to be at least 15-nill." However, "Thun is lucky, they have a good draw with Arsenal".

Unfortunately, the Emirates Stadium is still to be completed. Actually it opens in August 2006. The Wankdorf stadium "Stade de Suisse" has actually just been completed recently. (By the way, I don't like the name of the stadium. It's syntactically wrong and supposed to be "Stade de la Suisse") It has been upgraded to a new capacity of more than 30'000 spectators. Not much, compared to the new Arsenal stadium. They decided to extend its capacity to around 60'000 football enthusiasts.

I have never been interested in football or any similar sport. However, I wonder how this bit will turn out. But honestly, I would not bet a single penny on FC Thun - Sorry guys ;)

Hands on deck! The Elgato DTT is a pocket sized device to receive digital terrestrial TV. Since cable TV is very common in Switzerland, DVB-T is hardly known over there. The government is planning to complete the introduction of digital terrestrial television in Switzerland in 2008. It's a pity, because DVB-T is really way ahead. You get data transmitted to every emission including the showtimes and the titles of the shows.

Anyway, since yesterday, I have come across all the British programs, you may think of: A gardening show where an awful rotten backyard was turned into a beautyful flower garden, home improvement advices how to paint the walls of your room so they match the curtains and the carpet, World War II history shows about german U-Boots threatening British cruiser, archeologist shows where skulls and old castles get digged out of the ground and of course the famous Antique Road Show, where people bring in their attic contents to get it appraised by professionals. Well, this is about the whole range of TV the UK has to offer, I am a fraid. Unfortunately, better technology doesn't necessary mean better content, too.

Streetparade 2005

  Streetparade 2005
Originally uploaded by christoph b..
Yesterday was a big day for Zurich. So here's a small collection I've come across the recent days. These are the world's markets: EMEA is "European, Middle East and Africa", "LATAM" is "Latin America", "APAC" are the Asian and Pacifics, "NAM" is "North America", "CEE" is "Central East Europe", "GSA" is "Germany Switzerland Austria"

The "MD" is the "Managing Director", the "CEO" is the "Chief Executive Officer", "COO" means "Chief Operational Officer", "CFO" is obviously the "Chief Financial Officer". The "VP" is the "Vice President", "SVP" is the "Senior Vice President" and the "EVP" is the "Executive Vice President".

"FMCG" are "Fast Moving Consumer Goods", "VAT" are "Value Added Taxes", "LTD" means "Private Limited Company by Shares", "GDP" is the "Gross Domestic Product", "PPP" is "Purchase Power Parity". "Q1", "Q2", "Q3" and "Q4" are quartals.

Well but the best abbreviations I've come across during my work in the UK was the "POETS" day. It's actually long haul bus or a train carriage. What the heck do you mean by "handy"? Ah, sorry ... it's a "cellphone". "Monitors" are being used for surveillance. You are probably thinking of a "screen". If you want to pass the security, they won't let you through with a "badge". You would need a "pass". And a "bike" is usually "propelled". Otherwise it would be a push-bike.

No frills rule

If you are an easy going person and not keen on frills, you might catch an easyJet in Basel and get to Luton for not more than 3£ if you're lucky. But using british computers means also getting used to the british keyboard layout. That's not a big deal, unless you have to switch back and forth all the time, if you're working with both systems at the same time. So I decided to switch to the british system, as most of the characters used for programming are much easier to access. I'll find out - the hardest bit are y and z that are swapped, that's whz zou might find strange characters here in the next couple of dazs.

Soon I can consider myself as an UberGeek!

The Sky is the Limit

The Sky is the Limit
Originally uploaded by christoph b..
Yesterday, I visited my friend Andy, who I've met in Birmingham, when I was there in 2003. He lives at Barbican, in one of these massive towers on floor 37. It's quite a good and central place to stay, right next to the business district of London, near London Wall street. The weather was nice and we could see all the way over the city through to the Canary Wharf. It's just amazing, induldging with a glass of beer on the balcony and watching the sunset reflecting in the glass walls of the "Gurke". But this fantastic view has it's price. All you need is another loose 590 £ per week and the sky is yours.

We're not afraid

  We're not afraid
Originally uploaded by christoph b..
My contribution to Werenotafraid.com.

Attacks on London

Everything started as usual this morning. The first thing I noticed was, when I arrived at my office was, that a car was horning and driving at high-speed on the wrong lane. It then became clear. At the office, I read in the news, there was a Underground issue at nearby Liverpool Street Station. Apparently a train exploded and they were suspecting a circuit shortcut.

Only when we heared about Buses exploding, all this was getting suspicious. Now we are following the news and hope, everything's going to be fine.

Currently the army is getting in, nobody can leave the city, the mobile phone network has gone down.

We'll check the ticker at http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/0,1518,364104,00.html

Computing Fruits

Yesterday, I went to the Apple Store. It's a huge flagship store of apple, where you cannot only consume Apple products but also pure lifestyle. The two stories building in Regents Street in the middle of London (Oxford Circus) is perfectly designed for all fashion-aware techies out there. It's for people that are tired of staring into grey windoze boxes with cloudy desktop wallpapers that turn to white on blue text screens from time to time. The all black dressed staff is friendly and willing to consult you on any product that is exposed in the wooden shelfs. The cash desk is located in front of a huge white glowing Apple logo layed into a shiny silver metallic wall. You have to queue up in a long line indicated by cords to get to the cash desk and finally be able to pay. After an hour and 25 minutes, we touched down one minute ahead schedule at the little London City Airport on the east end of London. A cab brought me and my 30kg suitcase (7 kg overweight!) to my flat for a 20 quid.

Shortly after arriving at home, I went off for my first shopping trip at the local Tesco market, where I covered myself with spaghetti and stir-in sauce in all various flavours for the next couple of days.

Stir-in sauces are a very clever invention. As you certainly have guessed, you simply stir-in the sauce in your freshly cooked noodles and you kill three birds with one stone: there's no need to warm up the sauce, there's no need to wait for the noodles to cool down and best of all, there's no need to give a wash to an additional pan. Perfect! Find soon the results of this amazing invention on this weblog.

In the evening, I got invented for dinner at a friend's house. Here's a small "how2 get out of Switzerland", a cookbook for all the folks out there, that need this. BTW, it only applies to emmigrations, that take longer than six months.

Needs:
- 1x an address in Switzerland that could take over correspondence for you while you are abroad
- "Krankenkasse Contracts"
- "Lohnausweise"
- anything you need to confirm the substractions from the "Steuererklärung"
- money to pay your taxes

1.) Throw away all the stuff you don't need anymore.

2.) Go to the authorities, take the "Steuererklärung" and all the stuff associated with that with you. You will have to pay your taxes, otherwise they won't give you the emigration confirmation, which you need to cancel contracts. (Krankenkasse, telephone, Internet, flat) Bring the money in cash.

3.) Check if you passport and ID is valid as long as you stay abroad.

4.) Check if you can keep some of the "Zusatzversicherungen" at the "Krankenkasse". Some Krankenkassen like CSS for example even offer international insurance. (www.ihp.ch) Depending on where you're going it might be worth contracting this.

5.) If you've been in the army: Get rid of your Swiss Army stuff. You will have to bring it to the "Zeughaus", where they will check, if it's complete. If you got stuff missing, you would have to pay for it.

6.) Depending on which country you're going, check if you are able to keep paying for the "AHV". It's worth it, since you would get less money once pensioned, if you have missing AHV contributions.

Well, I just returned my Swiss Army stuff this morning, so I guess, I am ready to take off. You will soon read here, how to get settled in the UK.

Good Bye Stationsstrasse

  Stationsstrasse
Originally uploaded by christoph b..
This weekend, I've been cleaning up my room, throwing away all the garbage, painting the walls. Katia, my Mom and Theus helped me on that, which I am very greatful for. After 6 years at the Stationsstrasse, time has come to sally forth to new borders, face new challenges and broaden the horizon.

Living at the Stationsstrasse was quite an experience. Keeping household quite a challenge. But in the end, we all got along. We kept our mess within our rooms. The neighbourhood has always been an interesting folks. From Ferrari driving pimps, wannabe-red-indians, insomnious students, wat-po-massage-thais over to portuguese barbers, african fish-cookers and an evil bicycle shop.

The Stationsstrasse will remain in my memories as a loud, dusty, place with a smelly backyard, a 24/7 gas station (that closed during the millenium change for 15 minutes), cozy dvd-evenings, burning hot summers, student's life and much partying!

My new office

  My new office
Originally uploaded by christoph b..
This is going to be the office I will be working the next two years.
